Interactive Map of the Maya World
Interactive Map of the Maya World
This interactive map is a collaboration between the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), in coordination with the Maya World Organization and its member countries, aimed at highlighting the archaeological sites and natural reserves where the Maya Civilization settled.
The Maya Region currently includes the countries of Guatemala, Belize, western El Salvador and Honduras, and the Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. Like any cultural region, this territory cannot be defined by borders, so its boundaries have varied over time and represent areas of high interaction with neighboring groups. Of all the cultural diversity that has existed throughout human history, the Maya stand out as one of the most impressive cultures.
This classification is not only based on their extraordinary achievements in antiquity but also on their admirable continuity over time, which has allowed them to preserve millennia-old customs and traditions. Before the Spanish conquest, the Maya Civilization stood out in Mesoamerica and throughout the Americas for unique achievements, including the development of a logo-syllabic writing system, a vigesimal numerical system that included the concept of zero, the synchronization of more than five calendrical systems, and the development of complex cities within jungle environments that were not conducive to supporting thousands of inhabitants. Furthermore, the architectural, sculptural, pictorial, and artisanal expressions of the ancient Maya people rival those documented in other regions of the world.
